The football’s played straight. Everything around it is people.
Mud & Glory starts at the very bottom: a village club with a tea hut, a pitch that cuts up by November and a volunteer groundsman who is also the kit man and the secretary. There is no formation that wins, only a plan that beats this lot on Saturday.

Start at step 7
A muddy pitch, a tea hut and part-timers who work for a living: a bus driver at full-back, a plasterer in midfield. Six levels and 152 clubs above you, play-offs, and a ground that has to pass grading before you can go up.

The right plan beats a bigger club
Eight formations and five team instructions. None of them wins on its own: sit deep against a side that pushes on, press one that can’t pass, go wide against full-backs who don’t defend.

On the touchline
Every match is played live, as 2D highlights or in the commentary. At half-time, around the hour and with a quarter of an hour left, you make the subs, change the shape and give the team talk.

Two cups. Real cup nights
The Challenge Cup for all 152 clubs, with replays in the early rounds and the cameras at the big ties, and the Counties Shield for the lower levels, straight to penalties at 90 minutes.
How it is built
It began with the match engine, built and tested on its own before there was a single screen, so the game is about reading the other side, not finding a winning formation.
Back to all work- Built twice, natively: Swift and SwiftUI on iPhone and iPad, Kotlin and Jetpack Compose on Android
- A match engine of its own, built and tested before there was a single screen, and calibrated over 10,000 simulated seasons against real English football
- Every tactic pays off against one kind of opponent and costs you against another
- Its own layouts for tablets, foldables and the iPad, with a sidebar and two columns, in portrait and landscape
- Up to five careers, kept in your Android backup, and in iCloud between your iPhone and iPad
- A weekly challenge that’s the same for everyone, on a Google Play Games or Game Center leaderboard
- Play Billing and StoreKit 2 for the Season Ticket. No ads, no subscription, no packs and nothing random for money
- Every club, town, league, player, crest and business is made up
- Designed and made by Hoome.
Questions people ask
- What kind of game is Mud & Glory?
- A football management game for Android phones and tablets, coming soon to iPhone and iPad. You take over a village club at step 7 of a made-up English pyramid and climb six levels to the top flight, a season at a time: pick the team, set it up to play, make the calls from the touchline, and build the club with transfers, contracts, a youth intake and a ground that passes the league’s grading.
- What exactly is free?
- Pre-season and the first three league games of every career you start, plus a cup tie in week 3 if your club has one, and the first three matches of the weekly challenge. Game four asks for the Season Ticket. Everything that isn’t a match stays open, so you can still look round your club.
- What does the Season Ticket cost?
- £6.99 once, for every match of every season, in every career you start, plus the challenges and the weekly, for good, on every device with your Google account. On the App Store, Family Sharing will cover your family’s devices too. There are no ads and no subscription.
- What are Local Sponsor, The Takeover and Job for Life?
- Optional extras for Season Ticket holders, sold in the Club shop and never on match day. A Local Sponsor (£1.99) and The Takeover (£4.99) put money into the career you’re playing; the board’s wage cap still holds and players still have to want to come. Job for Life (£1.99, once) means you can’t be sacked, switched on per career. A career that uses one is marked Backed, and none of them are ever used in the challenges or the weekly.
- How do I restore my purchases?
- Use the same Google account you bought with and tap Restore on the welcome page, on game four’s Season Ticket page, or in the Club shop (scroll to the foot of the Clubhouse, tap The Boot Room, then Club shop). The Season Ticket and Job for Life restore on every device. Local Sponsor and The Takeover are paid into a career when you buy them, so their money is already in that career.
- Where are my careers saved?
- You can have up to five careers. On Android they are saved on your phone or tablet and included in your Android backup, so they come back when you restore a backup onto a new device. On iPhone and iPad they will also be kept in iCloud, so an iPhone and an iPad on the same Apple Account share them.
- Do I need Google Play Games?
- Only for the weekly challenge’s leaderboard (Game Center on iPhone and iPad). A new weekly starts every Monday and is the same for everyone; the first go you finish each week is the scored one and goes on the board. Without Play Games the weekly plays just the same, with no board.
- Are the clubs real?
- No. Every club, town, league, player, crest and business is made up. Nothing in the game is licensed from, or connected to, any real club or league.
- Where can I get it?
- Mud & Glory is out now on Google Play for Android phones and tablets, free to try. The iPhone and iPad version is coming soon to the App Store.
- Something not right?
- Email [email protected] with your device model and Android or iOS version, and the club and season if it’s about a career, and we’ll get back to you.
